Three criminals accused of hurling grenades at police posts in Punjab’s Gurdaspur were killed in an encounter with police in Uttar Pradesh’s Pilibhit on Monday morning, a senior police officer said.

Sharing details on social media platform X, Punjab Police DGP Gaurav Yadav said, “In a major success against the terrorist module of Pak-sponsored Khalistan Zindabad Force (KZF), an encounter was led by UP Police and Punjab Police in a joint operation. Three module members opened fire on the police party. This terrorist module is involved in grenade attacks on police establishments in the border areas of Punjab.”

The injured have been identified as Gurvinder Singh, Varinder Singh and Jasanpreet Singh, who were taken to the hospital for treatment.

Officials have recovered two AK-series rifles, two Glock pistols and a large quantity of ammunition from the scene. “This morning, a team of Punjab Police informed Puranpur police station that the suspects of the grenade attack on a police post by alleged Khalistani terrorists may be hiding in the area,” SP Pandey said.

On receiving information, police teams immediately cordoned off the area and searched it. They later received information about three suspicious youths on a motorcycle, who were riding dangerously and carrying potentially harmful items towards Pilibhit.

“Both Punjab Police and Puranpur police station chased the suspects. Meanwhile, Gajrola and Madhav Thanda police stations were alerted about possible escape routes. On a canal track near an under-construction bridge, the suspects opened fire when challenged by the police. In the retaliatory firing, all three were injured and were later sent to CSC Puranpur for treatment,” Pandey said. However, they later succumbed to their injuries.
