The US Supreme Court has made a historic and far-reaching ruling on birthright citizenship. The court has made it clear that every child born in the US will be a US citizen at birth, regardless of whether his parents are living in the country illegally or have come to the US on a temporary visa. The Supreme Court, by a majority of 5-4, declared former President Donald Trump’s executive order unconstitutional and struck down the provision that denied citizenship to such children at birth. Chief Justice John Roberts, writing the majority decision, said that the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution grants the right to citizenship to every child born on American soil and this constitutional right cannot be terminated by any executive order or general law.
