In view of the increasing threat of cyber fraud and online cheating in the country, the central government has taken a tough stance on the new Username feature of WhatsApp. The government has issued a notice to Meta, seeking clarification within three days and has directed that this feature should not be implemented in India until its security aspects are thoroughly investigated. The government is concerned that the facility of hiding the phone number may make it easy to defraud people by creating fake accounts. With more than 500 million WhatsApp users in India, the government is closely examining every aspect of this feature so that the security of the users can be ensured.
