A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck the southern Mexican state of Chiapas on Friday, prompting a tsunami warning for nearly one million people. The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the epicenter was about 10 kilometers (6 miles) below the surface near Puerto Madero, causing strong tremors. The US Tsunami Warning System has issued a tsunami alert for the southern Pacific coast of Chiapas, the coastal areas of Oaxaca and the Pacific coast adjacent to Guatemala, urging people to stay away from beaches and low-lying coastal areas. The tremors were also felt in neighboring Guatemala and El Salvador. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties, but authorities are monitoring the situation closely for possible tsunami waves within a radius of about 300 kilometers (186 miles) of the epicenter. Sea level monitoring has been intensified in border coastal areas including Suchiate and emergency teams have also been put on alert.
