George Kurien, who was the Union Minister of State for Fisheries and Minority Affairs in the Modi government, has resigned from his post, which has been accepted by President Draupadi Murmu with immediate effect.
George Kurien was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Madhya Pradesh on August 27, 2024. His term began on September 4, 2024. The seat fell vacant after Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia was elected to the Lok Sabha. His Rajya Sabha term ended on June 21. He was not repeated in the last Rajya Sabha elections, due to which he is no longer a member of either House of Parliament. A press release issued by the Rashtrapati Bhavan said that the President of India, on the advice of the Prime Minister, has accepted the resignation of George Kurien from the Union Council of Ministers under clause (2) of Article 75 of the Constitution with immediate effect.
The inclusion of senior BJP leader Kurien in the third term of the Modi government was considered an important message towards the Christian community of Kerala. George Kurien, associated with the BJP since 1980, has held several important responsibilities in the party and the government. His resignation is being seen as a politically significant development.
