Nepal’s KP Sharma Oli government on Thursday (September 4, 2025) decided to ban 26 social media platforms, including Facebook, X, Instagram and YouTube, citing their failure to meet the deadline to comply with registration requirements in Nepal.

The decision to ban more than two dozen apps comes two weeks after Nepal’s top court ruled that online and social media platforms – domestic or foreign – must be registered with a competent authority. | Photo credit: Reuters

Issuing a public notice, the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology said it has “ordered the Nepal Telecommunication Authority to deactivate all unregistered social media sites until they are registered.”

After repeated requests, the government then, on August 28, set a seven-day deadline for social media platforms in Nepal to register. The deadline expired on Wednesday night. On Wednesday afternoon, ministry spokesperson Gajendra Thakur said the government hopes that social media companies will contact them before midnight. If they do not, he said the government will take action accordingly. As soon as no one contacts them, the decision to impose the ban was taken at a meeting held at the ministry on Thursday.
