India’s Divya creates history in chess, wins World Cup, becomes youngest player to win title

India’s Divya Deshmukh has created history. Divya defeated compatriot Koneru Humpy in the tiebreaker of the Women’s Chess World Cup final to win the title. Divya has become the youngest player to win the Women’s Chess World Cup title. She also became a Grandmaster. Divya is the 88th player from India to become a Grandmaster. In the All India final, Divya defeated Koneru Humpy 2.5-1.5. She drew the first round of the rapid game, while she won the second rapid round. Divya is the first Indian woman player to become a world champion.

Rising Indian player Divya Deshmukh on Monday forced her highly-rated grandmaster and compatriot Koneru Humpy to a draw without giving her any chance in the second game of the FIDE Women’s World Cup Final. Divya, who failed to capitalise on her brilliant start in the first game of the final on Saturday, did better in the second game despite playing with the black pieces.
