Earthquake hits Alaska, USA: Earthquake tremors felt, 7.3 magnitude earthquake, tsunami alert issued

 A 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck near Sand Point, Alaska, US, on Wednesday, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a tsunami warning. Sand Point is located on Popoff Island, northwest of the Alaska Peninsula. It is about 600 miles southwest of Anchorage, Alaska. According to the USGS (United States Geological Survey), the earthquake occurred 54 miles south of Sand Point, with its epicenter 20 kilometers below the surface.

According to Michigan Technological University, a major earthquake capable of cauing serious damage is considered to be a magnitude 7.0-7.9. Only 10-15 earthquakes of this magnitude are recorded each year. The tsunami warning said the threat was from southern Alaska and the Alaska Peninsula to the Kennedy Inlet and Unimac Pass on the Pacific coast.

The National Weather Service has urged residents in these areas to seek higher ground or to the upper floors of multi-story buildings. Earthquake tremors are often felt in this seismically active area. Emergency services officials are closely monitoring the situation amid fears of a possible tsunami. There are no reports of any damage in Alaska due to this earthquake.
