On the eighth day of the Commonwealth Games, Indian athletes performed brilliantly and added two more medals to the country’s trophy. Weightlifter Lovepreet Singh from Amritsar, Punjab, won the silver medal in the men’s 110 kg weight category by lifting a total of 388 kg. Lovepreet lifted 176 kg in snatch and 212 kg in clean and jerk. He also set a new Commonwealth Games record in the snatch event, but he missed out on the gold medal by just one kg from New Zealand’s David Andrews.
Meanwhile, in the women’s discus throw event, 27-year-old Seema made India proud by winning a bronze medal with a throw of 58.65 meters. After being away from the sport for more than three years due to motherhood and a serious knee injury, Seema has made a remarkable comeback. Although her last three attempts were fouls, the throw made in the third attempt took her to the podium. In this event, Samantha Hall of Jamaica won the gold medal and Julia Tunks of Canada won the silver medal. With this medal, India’s total medal count has reached 17, which includes 3 gold, 10 silver and 4 bronze medals. India is currently at 10th place in the medal list.
