The Trump administration is preparing to introduce a new and stricter rule for immigrants waiting to obtain a green card (PR) in the US. According to sources connected to the White House, under a pilot program, some green card applicants may have to deposit a financial bond of up to 1,00,000 US dollars (about 1 crore rupees) during the application process. This rule may apply especially to those who are applying for immigrant visas through US consulates located abroad. However, this amount will not be permanently forfeited and the entire amount of the bond will be returned when the applicant acquires US citizenship. In addition, family members living in the US will also be able to deposit this bond on behalf of the applicant. For now, this scheme will be launched as a pilot program in a few select countries, but the Trump administration has not yet said which countries will come under its purview. If this proposal is implemented, it could prove to be a major financial and procedural change for thousands of immigrants wishing to obtain permanent residence in the US.
