The Indian government has taken a major decision to ban Ullu, ALTT, Desiflix, Big Shots and other streaming apps. The government has taken this decision under the policy against obscene and sexual content. This decision was taken after the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) received complaints from several citizens and organizations against these apps.
The investigation into the matter was initiated after complaints of obscene content were received. During this, it was found that obscene content was being openly broadcast in the name of erotic web series. The government found that the content of the 18+ OTT channels was in violation of the IT Rules 2021 and Sections 292/293 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Although OTT platforms were given the right to self-regulation, many platforms misused this facility and broke the boundaries of regulation. As a result, the government had to intervene directly.
