Despite 300 units of free electricity, theft of Rs 2,600 crore reported in Punjab

Punjab power theft has reached alarming levels in Punjab, while domestic consumers are getting free power. The loss has reached Rs 2,600 crore in 2023-24. The state government gives a subsidy of over Rs 6,000 crore in exchange for 300 units of free power and Rs 1,400 crore was given to domestic consumers in exchange for a discount of Rs 2.50 – up to 7 kW load. Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) has 20 notorious theft-prone divisions, which account for half of the revenue loss of Rs 2,600 crore. The highest power theft is in the border zone, The PSPCL ‘s west and south zones come next. The Tarn Taran circle, with four divisions; and the Ferozepur circle, suburban Amritsar and Sangrur circles, each with three divisions, are among the major theft-prone zones.
