A big relief news has come to Indian tourists, pilgrims and businessmen travelling to Nepal. The Nepal government has officially approved the use of new Indian currency notes of ₹200 and ₹500, lifting a ban imposed for almost a decade. According to a notification issued by the Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) on July 23, 2026, this approval will be only for new ₹200 and ₹500 notes issued after November 9, 2016, while old ₹500 and ₹1000 notes issued before demonetization will continue to be banned in Nepal as before. According to the new rules, an individual will be able to carry a maximum of ₹25,000 Indian cash to Nepal and will also be able to bring the same amount back to India. Apart from this, Indian currency will not be allowed to be taken from Nepal to any third country. Nepal Rastra Bank has also issued new guidelines regarding foreign exchange, according to which foreign currency of US $ 5,000 or its equivalent can be brought into Nepal without customs declaration, but in case of an amount exceeding this, a written declaration will be mandatory at the customs office. This decision will provide considerable relief to Indian tourists from the hassle of exchanging currency, while transactions will also become much easier and more convenient for Nepali traders doing business with India and people of the border areas. It is expected that this decision will give a new boost to tourism, religious pilgrimages and trade activities between the two countries.
