In view of the escalating tensions between the US and Iran and the rising prices of crude oil in the international market, the central government has decided to impose a major hike in the windfall tax on the export of diesel and aviation turbine fuel (ATF). According to the new rates, the windfall tax on diesel has been increased from Rs 8.5 to Rs 15.5 per litre and on ATF from Rs 7.5 to Rs 14.5 per litre, while the windfall tax on petrol has been reduced by Rs 4 per litre. The government says that this step has been taken to ensure the availability of fuel in the domestic market and to prevent exporters from taking excessive advantage of international prices. This tax is applicable only to exporting companies, so there is no possibility of any increase in the retail prices of petrol and diesel within the country. This decision of the government will not have any direct impact on the pockets of the common consumers, although the situation in the international oil market is being constantly monitored.
