US President Donald Trump, who missed out on the Nobel Peace Prize this year, has finally received the year-end peace prize. The award was presented to him by FIFA, the world governing body of international football.
On Friday, December 5, the draw ceremony for next year’s FIFA Men’s World Cup was held in Washington. Donald Trump was announced as the first winner of the newly created FIFA Peace Prize. The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
What did the FIFA president say?
It is also worth noting that FIFA President Gianni Infantino is one of Trump’s closest sporting aides. Presenting the award to Trump, he said, “This is your prize, this is your peace prize.” The FIFA president said, “He has been chosen for his extraordinary and outstanding work in promoting peace and unity around the world.”
FIFA says the award is for “those who, through unwavering commitment and extraordinary work, help unite people in peace.” He added, “That’s what we need from a leader, a leader who cares about the people.” Meanwhile, Infantino also mentioned peace agreements between several countries.
At the awards ceremony, Trump wore a gold medal around his neck and was presented with a gold trophy that had his name written on it and depicted hands holding the globe, similar to the FIFA World Cup.
What did Trump say upon receiving the award?
Trump appeared excited after receiving the FIFA Peace Prize. “This is one of the greatest honors of my life,” he said. He then thanked his family, especially his wife Melania, and praised the leaders of host countries Canada and Mexico, saying it would be better for all three countries.
