India’s LPG market witnessed a major shift during the month of September. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has regained the status of the largest supplier of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to India, overtaking the US. According to Kepler data, the UAE’s share in India’s total LPG imports in September was 39 per cent, compared to just 13 per cent in August. The UAE supplied 5.47 lakh tonnes of LPG to India in September, up 182 per cent from 1.93 lakh tonnes in August. On the other hand, supplies from the US fell by 58 per cent to 3.23 lakh tonnes and its share also came down from 53 per cent to 23 per cent. Apart from this, Kuwait was at the third position with over 1.32 lakh tonnes of supply and Qatar at the fourth position with over 1.15 lakh tonnes of supply. During September, India did not import any LPG from Saudi Arabia, while the country’s total LPG imports decreased by 4 percent to 1.39 lakh tonnes. It is worth noting that earlier, due to tensions between the US and Iran and the disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, supplies from the Gulf countries were affected, due to which India had to increase its dependence on the US. Now, supplies from the Middle East are improving, but the cost of freight transportation still remains high due to the threat to ships in the Strait of Hormuz. According to experts, India can continue the policy of taking LPG supplies from different countries to strengthen its energy security, so that dependence on any one country or region can be reduced.
