There is important news for students from Punjab preparing to go to Canada on a study visa. The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has increased the financial resources requirement for a study permit. According to the new rules, a single student applying after September 1, 2026, will have to provide proof of a minimum of 23,448 Canadian dollars for their living and other essential expenses, which is approximately 17 lakh rupees in Indian rupees. This amount is about 2 lakh rupees more than before and will not include college or university tuition fees and travel expenses to and from Canada.
Under the new rules, students will have to provide clear evidence of their financial capacity at the time of visa application. This will include the first year’s tuition fees, the amount required for specified living expenses and funds for travel expenses. If the student is also traveling to Canada with family members, the required amount will increase further. For example, financial capacity of 29,185 CAD for two members, 35,880 CAD for three members and 43,562 CAD for four members will have to be shown. Additional funds will also have to be shown for each additional family member. However, the financial requirement rules for Quebec are different. According to IRCC, this new financial limit will not apply to students who have applied by August 31, 2026. Therefore, students applying after September 1 will have to ensure proper proof of the required funds in their bank statements and other financial documents before applying.
