India’s star weightlifter Mirabai Chanu has given the country its first gold medal with a brilliant performance in the Commonwealth Games 2026. In the women’s 48 kg weight category, Chanu lifted a total of 190 kg to win the gold medal. She lifted 85 kg in snatch and 105 kg in clean and jerk. With this victory, Mirabai created new history by winning her third consecutive Commonwealth gold medal. Before this, she had also won gold medals in the 2018 Gold Coast and 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, while she had won a silver medal in the 2014 Glasgow Games. Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Chanu made a brilliant comeback despite failing in her initial attempt to set a Commonwealth record. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated Mirabai Chanu for this historic achievement and said that she has not only increased the pride of the country with her unparalleled performance, but also remains an inspiration to crores of Indians.
