The world’s richest man Elon Musk has scored a major breakthrough in India. Elon Musk’s company Starlink has received a major license from the Ministry of Telecommunications. People familiar with the matter have told Reuters. With the license, a major hurdle has been cleared for Starlink, which provides satellite internet, and it has come closer to the commercial launch of its operations in India.
It has become the third company to receive the license. Earlier, the Department of Telecom has granted licenses to Eutelsat’s OneWeb and Reliance Jio to provide services in India. Currently, both Starlink and the Department of Telecom have not commented on the matter. Starlink has been waiting for a license to operate commercially in India since 2022, but it has been delayed due to various reasons, including national security concerns. Amazon’s Kuiper is still waiting for its India license.
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has issued a Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite (GMPCS) permit to Elon Musk’s company Starlink. Also, the company will be issued trial spectrum in the coming days. After the spectrum is allotted, the company will have to demonstrate all compliances, including safety conditions, to the government. Starlink will also have to seek approval from the space regulator Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN-SPACE). The company has already provided all the details to get the clearance, but the approval is yet to be received. The start of commercial services will depend on the successful demonstration of compliance with safety conditions by the company. This was stated in a report by the Economic Times.
