Canada’s Liberal Party has banned Indian-origin MP Chandra Arya from contesting elections under the party’s banner. The decision comes amid allegations of close ties to the Indian government. He also met Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to India last year.
The Globe and Mail report quoted sources as saying that Chandra Arya had not informed the Canadian government about his visit to India, while relations between India and Canada were going through a very tense period at that time.
However, the Canadian government and the Liberal Party have not given any reason to bar Chandra Arya from contesting the elections. Sources say that the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) had informed the Canadian government about Arya’s alleged close ties with the Indian government. Arya had also taken a briefing on the issue of foreign interference, about which concerns were raised.
Chandra Arya has completely denied these allegations and said that the Globe and Mail today published an article regarding the Liberal Party banning me from contesting the upcoming elections. As a member of parliament, I interact with many diplomats and heads of state and government in Canada and internationally. I have never sought permission from the government for any such meeting. He said that the Liberal Party’s main objection is to my outspokenness on issues related to Canadian Hindus and my firm stand on Khalistani extremism.
