The new airport to be built at Halwara Airbase will be called Halwara Airport. The airport has been given the airport code HWR, which is mandatory before starting work. Air India had applied for it. The Airports Authority of India has requested the Punjab Public Works Department (PWD) to transfer the entire possession of the constructed civil airport terminal.

This transfer is necessary to make the airport operational. AAI Chairman Vipin Kumar told Rajya Sabha member Sanjeev Arora that the operational date will be decided after the terminal building is officially handed over to AAI by the Public Works Department. The handover process will be completed soon.

MP Arora raised the matter with Ludhiana Deputy Commissioner Jitendra Jorwal and appealed to him to ensure the formal handover of the new terminal building to AAI by the Public Works Department at the earliest so that the airport can be made operational at the earliest. Air India is showing interest in commercial flights after the airport is operational, hence the airline operations will also start soon.

MP Arora is in constant touch with various agencies and departments of the Central and State Governments to make this work a reality and put Ludhiana, also known as the Manchester of India, on the world map. This airport will not only serve the people of Ludhiana but also the Malwa region and some adjoining areas of the states. MP Sanjeev Arora has assured that he will make every effort to complete the dream project of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, Halwara Airport at the earliest.
