The Union Home Ministry on Saturday appointed IAS Amit Kumar of 2008 batch of Punjab cadre as Commissioner of Chandigarh Municipal Corporation. This appointment has been made on the basis of inter-cadre deputation from Punjab cadre to AGMUT cadre. The post of commissioner fell vacant after the departure of Punjab cadre IAS Anindita Mitra. At this time, DC Vinay Pratap Singh had the additional charge of Corporation Commissioner.

After the dismissal of Anindita Mitra, the Punjab government had also sent a list of three IAS officers for the post of municipal commissioner. The panel consisted of IAS Amit Kumar, IAS Ramveer and IAS Girish Dayalan. IAS Amit Kumar is posted as Joint Development Commissioner in Punjab Rural Development.

On Saturday, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet of the Government of India has approved the proposal of the Ministry of Home Affairs, under which Amit Kumar has been appointed as the Commissioner of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation.

On September 22, the central government had also given an extension of three months to Anindita Mitra, but by then the Punjab government had sent a panel of three officers to the Chandigarh administration for the post of commissioner. There was confusion over Mitra’s joining for the past several days. Now with the appointment of Amit Kumar as Municipal Commissioner on Saturday, it has become clear that Anindita Mitra will not join and Amit Kumar will be the next Commissioner of Chandigarh Municipal Corporation.
