A major achievement was recorded in the government health sector of Punjab on Tuesday. The first successful kidney transplant was performed at the Government Medical College (GMC) Patiala. With this, GMC Patiala has become the first government medical college in Punjab, where the facility of kidney transplant has been started. In this surgery performed on September 10, a 37-year-old patient from Sangrur district was donated by his 29-year-old wife. The patient was suffering from kidney failure and was undergoing hemodialysis thrice a week since December 2025. After medical examination and evaluation, his wife decided to donate her kidney voluntarily. The condition of both the patient and the donor is said to be stable and they are recovering under the supervision of doctors in the transplant ICU. The special thing is that the entire treatment was done free of cost under the Chief Minister’s Health Scheme, due to which the family did not have to spend any pocket money for the treatment. Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh congratulated the transplant team and said that such facilities at the government level will bring great relief to the common people. PGIMER Chandigarh also provided training, technical guidance and surgical support to set up this kidney transplant program.
