The Government of India has appointed senior diplomat Dinesh K. Patnaik as the next High Commissioner of India to Canada. He is a 1990 batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer and is currently serving as India’s Ambassador to Spain. According to information, he will assume his new post very soon.

Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand today announced that Christopher Cooter has been appointed as Canada’s new High Commissioner to India. The post was previously held by Cameron MacKay. The appointment follows an agreement reached between Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the G-7 summit in June last year. The two countries had pledged to advance their relations by appointing new High Commissioners.

Recently, relations between India and Canada have been tense. Issues related to Khalistani separatism and political statements had soured the relationship. The two countries have deep ties due to trade, education and Indian diaspora, but talks are at a difficult stage due to political differences. At such a time, the appointment of Dinesh Patnaik is being considered very important.
