Ahead of the festive season, traders and the general public across the country have got relief. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has decided to postpone the Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) charge applicable on select Person-to-Merchant (P2M) UPI transactions till immediately after Diwali. The new date will be announced separately. As per the proposed rules, some merchant payments above ₹2,000 may attract MDR charge of up to 0.4 per cent, while separate rates have been fixed for some essential services and capital market-related transactions. However, there will be no MDR charge on Person-to-Person (P2P) money transfers and purchases up to ₹2,000. The decision is aimed at encouraging business activities during the festive season and keeping digital payments smooth.
