The second stage of SpaceX’s Falcon-9 rocket is set to hit the moon’s surface today. The nearly four-ton rocket was launched during a lunar mission in January 2025 and has been circling uncontrollably in space since then. According to scientists, it will hit the western side of the moon at 12:05 pm Indian time at a speed of about 8,690 km per hour. The impact could leave a crater about 60 feet wide and 12 feet deep on the moon’s surface and send up a large plume of dust.

NASA has said that this incident does not pose any threat to Earth, but it is an important opportunity for scientists. With the help of images and data obtained from this collision, more information will be available about the lunar surface and the effects of space collisions. This part of the rocket had become uncontrollable due to the exhaustion of its fuel and is now considered certain to collide with the moon.
