The police department has taken major action after allegations of irregularities in the high-profile case of recovery of 90 kg of opium from the chassis of a truck in Sirsa. After the arrest of the investigating officer of the case, ASI Ranbir Singh, DSP Raj Singh has been transferred to Noah, while Sadar Police Station Chief Inspector Devendra Kumar has been suspended. The case is now being investigated by the Anti-Narcotics Bureau (ANB).
During the investigation, it was revealed that some of the 95 packets recovered from the truck had been tampered with. According to police records, 90 kg of opium was recovered, but during the court proceedings, the weight was found to be 88 kg 970 grams. Thus, 1 kg 30 grams of opium was found less, the value of which is said to be around Rs 4 lakh. ASI Ranbir Singh is being interrogated on remand and the opium will be re-weighed.
The arrested truck driver Kishna Ram has been remanded in police custody for 10 days in this case. Investigation has revealed that opium was being brought from Siliguri in West Bengal to Jodhpur in Rajasthan. Rajasthan Police had been monitoring the smugglers for about a month and based on the information, action was taken in collaboration with Sirsa Police.
The police have also arrested the truck owner Gagandeep Singh and the main supplier Sukhram on the driver’s identification.
The operation was carried out on June 10 near Bhawandin Toll Plaza on NH-9, where a joint team of Ding police station and Rajasthan Police recovered opium from secret compartments made under the chassis during a search of truck number JK-02-BK-5276.
