The central government has taken a major decision to maintain the supply of sugar in the country and control the rising prices by banning the export of sugar with immediate effect. According to the notification issued by the government, this ban will remain in force till September 30, 2026 or until further orders. This includes raw sugar, white sugar and refined sugar.

The government says that the pressure on sugar prices in the domestic market was increasing, due to which this step has been taken to ensure stable supply in the country. However, exports to the EU and USA under CXL and TRQ quotas, Advance Authorization Scheme (AAS) and Government-to-Government Agreements will remain outside this ban. Apart from this, consignments which are already in the process of export have also been exempted.

India is the world’s second largest sugar exporter. Earlier, the government had allowed 1.5 million metric tonnes of sugar exports, but now production is likely to fall short of consumption for the second consecutive year due to weak production in key sugarcane-growing regions.
