The weather in the country’s capital Delhi and its surrounding areas has changed suddenly. Rain and thunderstorms were witnessed here late on Saturday night. Heavy rain and strong winds severely affected normal life in the capital. Waterlogging at many places led to disruption in traffic, while flights at the Indira Gandhi International Airport were also affected.

Vehicles were stranded for hours due to heavy waterlogging in areas like Moti Bagh, Minto Road and near Terminal 1 of the airport. Not only Delhi, the weather also wreaked havoc in nearby areas like Jhajjar in Haryana. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had already issued a red alert and warned that there is a possibility of heavy rain and thunderstorm along with strong winds with a speed of 40 to 60 kmph or more.

Since Saturday evening, dark clouds started covering the sky of Delhi and some relief from the heat began to be felt. As the night progressed, the weather worsened. Around 2 am, strong winds suddenly started blowing in many parts of the capital, after which rain accompanied by thunder and lightning fell. The rain intensified in South, West and Outer Delhi. Heavy rain also fell in Noida. Along with this, light rain and strong thunderstorms were seen in NCR areas like Gurugram, Faridabad and Ghaziabad.

The situation at Indira Gandhi International Airport also deteriorated due to strong winds and low visibility. Several flights were delayed, while some were cancelled. IndiGo Airlines tweeted at 3:59 am, “Flights are being delayed due to bad weather in Delhi. The weather is improving slightly now, but the airport remains crowded. Flights are being resumed as soon as the situation normalizes.”

According to the Meteorological Department, the recent rains will definitely give some relief to the people of Delhi from the heat. At present, the day temperature is likely to remain around 37 degrees Celsius. But this relief is temporary. The Meteorological Department has clarified that the temperature will gradually increase again between May 22 and May 28. On May 26 and 28, the mercury may rise to 40 degrees Celsius.
