Today i.e. Friday is the last day for nominations for panchayat elections in Punjab. Although the elections are not being held on the party symbol, the opposition parties have demanded the Election Commission to ensure the nomination of their candidates.
Along with this, a large number of people are coming for nomination. In the case related to Gurdaspur’s Gunia Panchayat, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has ordered video recording of nomination, investigation and election. In this regard, Gurcharanjit Kaur, who is contesting for the post of Sarpanch, filed a petition. Along with this, the nomination time is till 3 pm.
The Punjab State Election Commission had announced the schedule of Panchayat elections in the state on September 25. Accordingly, the time for filing nominations for the posts of Panch and Sarpanch has been fixed from 27 to today. However, 170 election-related petitions were filed in Punjab and Haryana. Meanwhile, most of the petitions were related to reservation and stove tax.
The Punjab and Haryana court dismissed all the petitions while directing the state commission to rectify the deficiencies in the case. This has made it clear that the elections will be held on time. A gram panchayat consists of 5 to 13 panchas. There is a Sarpanch. Different candidates will stand from the ward. The voter list will be updated by September 4. At present there are 13937 Gram Panchayats. There are 19110 polling booths and 1,33,97,932 voters.
