The Supreme Court on Wednesday sought a response from the Madhya Pradesh government on a petition filed by two journalists who alleged they were assaulted inside a police station for reporting on the activities of the sand mafia in the state.
The Bench of Justice Sanjay Karol and Justice Satish Chandra Sharma issued notice to the state government while agreeing to hear the plea filed by journalists Shashikant Goyal and Amarkant Singh Chouhan.
During the hearing, the counsel for the petitioners urged the Court to grant interim protection from arrest, citing concerns over their safety and alleged police intimidation following their investigative reporting.
“Let the other side respond. Let the facts be brought by the state also,” the Bench said.
The matter will be taken up for hearing on June 9.
According to the petition, the incident occurred on May 1 after the journalists reported on illegal sand mining operations in the Chambal river region. The mining activities were allegedly being carried out with the connivance of local police, prompting retaliation from the authorities.
The journalists claim they were summoned by Superintendent of Police (SP) Yadav under the pretext of having tea. Upon arrival at his chambers, they found several other journalists stripped down to their undergarments and allegedly being physically assaulted. Jatav and Chouhan allege they were also assaulted in custody.
The journalists further contend that they cannot safely approach the Madhya Pradesh High Court due to ongoing threats and harassment from Bhind police, which allegedly extends to their families.
ਸੁਪਰੀਮ ਕੋਰਟ ਨੇ ਬੁੱਧਵਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਦੋ ਪੱਤਰਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਪਟੀਸ਼ਨ ‘ਤੇ ਮੱਧ ਪ੍ਰਦੇਸ਼ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਤੋਂ ਜਵਾਬ ਤਲਬ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ। ਪੱਤਰਕਾਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਦੋਸ਼ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਗੈਰ-ਕਾਨੂੰਨੀ ਰੇਤ ਮਾਈਨਿੰਗ ਗਤੀਵਿਧੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਰਿਪੋਰਟਿੰਗ ਕਰਨ ‘ਤੇ ਪੁਲੀਸ ਨੇ ਕੁੱਟਮਾਰ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ।
ਜਸਟਿਸ ਸੰਜੇ ਕਰੋਲ ਅਤੇ ਸਤੀਸ਼ ਚੰਦਰ ਸ਼ਰਮਾ (Justices Sanjay Karol and Satish Chandra Sharma) ਦੇ ਬੈਂਚ ਨੇ ਹਾਲਾਂਕਿ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਗ੍ਰਿਫਤਾਰੀ ਤੋਂ ਅੰਤਰਿਮ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਆ ਦੇਣ ਤੋਂ ਇਨਕਾਰ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਬੈਂਚ ਸ਼ਸ਼ੀਕਾਂਤ ਗੋਇਲ ਅਤੇ ਅਮਰਕਾਂਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਚੌਹਾਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਪਟੀਸ਼ਨਾਂ ‘ਤੇ ਸੁਣਵਾਈ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਸਹਿਮਤ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਮੱਧ ਪ੍ਰਦੇਸ਼ ਤੇ ਦਿੱਲੀ NCT ਨੂੰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਜਵਾਬ ਦੇਣ ਲਈ ਨੋਟਿਸ ਜਾਰੀ ਕੀਤੇ ਹਨ । ਮਾਮਲੇ ਦੀ ਅਗਲੀ ਸੁਣਵਾਈ 9 ਜੂਨ ਨੂੰ ਹੋਵੇਗੀ।
ਪਟੀਸ਼ਨਰਾਂ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਪੇਸ਼ ਹੋਏ ਵਕੀਲ ਨੇ ਅੰਤਰਿਮ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਆ ਲਈ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਤਾਂ ਅਦਾਲਤ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ, “ਦੂਜੇ ਪੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਜਵਾਬ ਦੇਣ ਦਿਓ। ਰਿਆਸਤ/ਸਟੇਟ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਵੀ ਤੱਥ ਲਿਆਉਣ ਦਿਓ। ਅਸੀਂ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਸੋਮਵਾਰ (9 ਜੂਨ) ਨੂੰ ਸੂਚੀਬੱਧ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹਾਂ।”
