Post-graduation work permit changes, new laws to come into effect on 1 November 2024, jolt to international students in Canada

Ottawa : Canada’s Justin Trudeau government is changing rules every day to reduce the number of temporary residents coming from abroad. Now Canada has announced changes to the work permit program to reduce the number of immigrants. These changes will come into effect from 1 November 2024. These are implemented for the Post Graduate Work Permit Program (PGWP). Since Canada is a favorite destination for people going abroad from India, these changes will have a big impact on Indians, especially Punjabis.

The number of temporary residents coming to Canada has increased in recent years, including international students and temporary foreign workers. Protests are growing in the Canadian community over the number of immigrants. In this regard, the Government of Canada is implementing new rules to address these changes, so that the amount of immigration can be controlled.

Foreign nationals moving to Canada must meet the General and Physical Location eligibility requirements to be eligible for the PGWP. It is worth noting that those applying before November 1, 2024 will also not be exempted if they are applying for the program after November 1. These applicants will also have to meet new requirements.

Language proficiency rules for those moving to Canada will now become more stringent. All applicants must demonstrate proficiency in French or English on or after November 1, 2024. Applicants to the PGWP program must achieve Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level 7. If you are a graduate you will need to obtain CLB level 5

Canada’s election is less than a year away and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s popularity continues to plummet. Inflation in the country is continuously increasing. Home prices are skyrocketing and a massive housing crisis has developed. The Trudeau government wants to protect itself by blaming its failure on the immigrants in the country. This is why Trudeau’s Liberal government wants to improve its image among the public by tightening the rules on immigrants.
